MAJOR FUNCTIONS

 

This position is a staff role reporting to the HSE Manager. Main responsibilities are to coach, mentor and support the site environmental team, provide advice on strategic and site environmental planning and resourcing. Support the implementation of Environmental initiatives on site and advise on strategic initiatives. The position will lead an environmental team with 4 staff direct reports and further contractor waste management personnel. The role is responsible for Waste Management including the dedicated Waste Management Team and incinerator. The Environmental Superintendent is a technical expert who will lead environmental strategic initiatives to improve emissions and sustainability.   

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in localisation program through on job training, coaching, and supporting the development of local national employees.
  • Provide environmental technical assistance as the focal point for all environmental issues relating to the company’s activities on KM Operations
  • Ensure Company practices comply, and procedures embody current Iraq and Kurdistan regional environmental legislation
  • Support and advise on improving emission monitoring and management.
  • Support and advise on the company’s renewable energy plans and sustainability initiatives.
  • Drive environmental initiatives including recycling, green areas, tree planting and environmental education.
  • Lead the Waste Management team including 12 personnel who gather, segregate, and recycle or incinerate the company’s waste at site.
  • Support the development of site waste management plans and monitor performance.
  • Provide advice and raise awareness of Company management and Contractors to the environmental impact of business activities and the measures available to reduce the potential for damage
  • Coordinate the preparation of environmental studies such as Environmental Impact Analysis, Environmental Management Plan, Environmental Monitoring Plan, and other internal reports as required by legislation and Company
  • Development the Environmental Management System in accordance with international best practices and monitor the implementation
  • Identify environmentally sensitive issues and recommend controls to remove, control or mitigate the impact in the development of new or modified facilities
  • Develop in-house environmental training programs and conduct awareness training across all disciplines
  • Develop risk assessment techniques and an environmental auditing program to ensure corrective actions for improvements are carried out in a timely manner
  • Prepare Annual Environmental Report and conduct the necessary presentations to government officials
  • Conduct investigations and prepare reports on any major oil spill incidents for submission to local authorities
  • Support emergency response with reference to spills.
  • Improve management of CFCs and other ozone depleting substances
  • Carry out environmental audits as required including of evaporation pits, bunded areas, Sewage Treatment units and other environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Ensure that actions committed to in ESIAs are being followed up and adhered to.
  • Develop and implement procedures to support and protect biodiversity.
  • Contribute to the definition of annual HSE KPIs and provide to the HSE Manager ongoing evidence of compliance.
  • Develop a system for identifying and monitoring environmentally critical elements (e.g., key valves).
  • Assist in HAZID/HAZOP study workshops when requested by the HSE Management
  • Support the enforcement of site rules and regulations
  • Weekly and Monthly reports to the HSE Manager regarding environmental activity highlights
  • Actively participate in scheduled HSE meetings
  • Other HSE related duties and tasks at the discretion of the line manager.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL, TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Degree or master’s in environmental sciences or similar Oil Spill response qualification
  • A proven track record in similar roles with 15 years minimum experience, at least 5 years must have been in the oil and gas industry.
  • Fully experienced in working with environmental management systems with an understanding of local safety management regulations
  • Proven experience of Environmental Impact Assessments
  • Experience in Emission Management, to an International Standard
  • Skilled in environmental audits and investigation methods
  • Experience working in remote multinational environments preferable
  • Understanding of oil and gas production equipment, processes, and utility systems
  • Experience in SAP system preferable
  • Understanding of Oil and Gas industry safety critical processes and systems
  • Prior experience of incinerator operations preferred
  • Experience of working with IPIECA preferable.
